Après avoir fait des études de théologie à la faculté protestante de Strasbourg, Auguste Nefftzer (1820-1876) entra en 1844 à La Presse, journal d’Émile de Girardin et en devint directeur politique en 1856. En 1861, il fonda Le Temps dont il fut directeur et rédacteur en chef jusqu’en 1871. Trois ans auparavant, il était à l’origine, avec Charles Dollfus de La Revue germanique.
